Libietis, Reese named All Americans

For their championship-level doubles during the 2013-14 season, Tennessee juniors Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese were officially named ITA All-Americans on Thursday.

Libietis and Reese, the NCAA doubles championships, ended the year ranked No. 1 in doubles by the college tennis governing body on Wednesday. On Thursday, they collected their second career All-America honors.

In their third season of playing doubles together, Libietis and Reese had their best season of doubles. They compiled a 36-5 record and won both the NCAA Championships and the ITA All-American Championships, becoming the first UT team to win multiple major titles.

The victories have started to add up for Libietis and Reese, who have exclusively played at the top of the UT doubles lineup when together. They have 73 victories as a team, which ranks fourth by a team in program history. Individually, they each have 94 doubles victories.

Since 1967, 33 Vols have earned tennis All-America honors a total of 67 times. In Sam Winterbotham’s eight years as head coach, eight Vols have been named All-America a total of 16 times. John-Patrick Smith is the program’s only four-time All-American. He was among the nation’s leaders in singles and doubles from 2008-11, reaching three individual NCAA finals.

ITA All-America honors in doubles are awarded based on achieving one of three qualifications: 1. being one of eight seeded teams in the NCAA doubles championship, 2. reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament, or 3. finishing the year ranked in the top 10. Libietis and Reese met all three requirements.
