Memphis AD says school deserves to be in SEC

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- University of Memphis Athletic Director R.C. Johnson says the school deserves to be in the Southeastern Conference.

He told WMC-TV on Monday that the SEC is where Memphis belongs geographically (http://bit.ly/qR7G2r ).

Johnson said the university wants to get in the best possible place and ultimately would like to be in the SEC. Memphis is now in Conference USA, where the Tigers field strong basketball teams but struggling football teams.

Johnson told the station he believes conference realignment is part of making a bright future for the school's teams.
