SEC: Vols' last play in Vandy win should not have been overturned

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The SEC has said that its officials made the incorrect ruling in the last play of Tennessee's 27-21 overtime win Saturday night against Vanderbilt

Steve Shaw, SEC Coordinator of Officials, issued this statement involving the play that was ultimately ruled a 90 yard interception for a touchdown by Vol defensive back Eric Gordon:

"On the last play of the Vanderbilt-Tennessee game, in overtime, the Tennessee defender intercepted the pass, his knee did not touch the ground and he returned the interception for a touchdown. During the play, the head linesman incorrectly ruled that the Tennessee player's knee was down when he intercepted the pass by blowing his whistle and giving the dead ball signal. The play was reviewed as if there was no whistle on the field and as a result, overturned the incorrect ruling. By rule, if there was a whistle blown, the play is not reviewable."

Leanne: I think there should be some rules applied to whiney fans and coaches that are sore loosers because they thought for sure this was their year to upset a team that they can't ever seem to beat. More shameful!

OHPLEASE: C'mon...Vandy gave you your first SEC win of the year...Most shameful! I'm disappointed about the loss but I do not whine about it as we Vandy fans are quite used to it.

The game did not go as I wanted it to but that's why we play, right? As for rules, I think there should be some rules applied to fan behavior. The ones wearing orange were the worst we have seen. Shameful!

I think the rule should be that if there is a challenge then the officials need to review it... no matter if you're in overtime or not or if the whistle was blown or not. The sideline official made the mistake of calling him down and then they reviewed it. It's fair for any team in any game to review a play, especially that kind of play. If it was the other way around and Vandy intercepted the ball and wasn't down I wouldn't want to take that away from them.

It seems that in some way Tn is changing all the rules - but for once (wrong or right) we got a break. First rule change - Tn vs Fla. Jabar never caught the pass - rule was changed to say what was and was not a completed pass - I have seen games were players held the ball 3 times longer than Jabar did and then lose control and pass was called incomplete - change 2 Then NCAA says that 10 seconds must run off the clock after last years TN vs NC bowl game - what a joke that was - Now Vanderbilt may get a rule change in the replay booth that says sound must also be on the tape - Know how Vandy feels -- been there

Regardless if a whistle blown...the offical ask the side judge if he blew his whistle...I saw he shake his head should not have been stands..

These SEC officials including the head of the SEC officials are a BIG JOKE!!! I watched that game if any whistle blew; Eric Gordon was already halfway down the field! They must have been for Vanderpoot!

So what happens if/when a fan blows a whistle? How can the players tell whether it's an officials whistle? If a fan is in the first row of seats, I doubt the players could tell if it was loud enough.

So they're saying they made a mistake by correcting their mistake? So they should have possibly cost TN the game because they messed up? Strange world.
