Lady Vols staggered by injuries

(UTLadyVols.com) -- The number two-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team suffered injuries to three players during last night’s Southeastern Conference, 87-69 victory over Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss.

After a morning of x-rays and physician consultations, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Jenny Moshak issued the following report:

“X-rays confirmed that Angie Bjorklund did break her nose. The nose will be splinted and she will be able to participate in non-contact drills at practice today.

“Alberta Auguste suffered a reoccurrence of her earlier shoulder/biceps strain. We will rehab and rest her today.

“Candace Parker sustained a bruise to her left knee. X-rays showed normal for her surgically repaired knee. She will also rehab and rest today.”

Bjorklund, a sharp-shooting rookie forward, caught a fist to her nose at the 17:52 mark in the second half. She returned to the game 14 minutes later to sub for Auguste, a senior forward, who had subbed in for Bjorklund during her injury earlier in the game. Auguste had to leave the game due to re-injuring her left biceps/shoulder. No sooner had Auguste taken a seat on the bench, than Parker went down in a sprawl on the baseline after missing a shot and trying to retrieve the rebound.

The Lady Vols will have an off-day on Saturday before returning to the practice floor on Sunday. Number 2-ranked Tennessee (21-1) faces #7-ranked Rutgers (19-3) in Thompson-Boling Arena on Mon., Feb. 11 on ESPN2 in a “Big Monday” meeting. The “Think Pink” contest will be a rematch of the 2007 NCAA title game between the two teams.
