Fresh off winning their second straight NCAA title, four Lady Vols players have been chosen in the first two rounds of the WNBA draft. Candace Parker was the number one pick overall.
Candace Parker was selected by the Los Angeles Sparks with the first pick in the WNBA draft on Wednesday, and Alexis Hornbuckle went fourth to the Detroit Shock. Shannon Bobbit went to the L.A. Sparks in the first pick of the second round. Nicky Anosike was chosen second in the second round, and will play for the Minnesota Linx.
Parker is the Associated Press player of the year, and joins Lisa Leslie, instantly turning Los Angeles into one of the top teams in the league. The Sparks were a franchise-worst 10-24 last season with Leslie sitting out after giving birth to a daughter in June.
Parker is engaged to Sacramento King forward, and former Duke player Selden Williams.
Parker wasn't the only Lady Vol who heard her name called today. Guard Alexis Hornbuckle was taken with the fourth overall pick by Detroit.
The second round saw Tennessee guard Shannon Bobbitt drafted by the Sparks. Bobbitt was the first pick of the second round, 15th overall. Center Nicky Anosike was taken after Bobbitt. She went to Minnesota with the 16th overall pick. And the third round saw guard Alberta Auguste drafted by the New York Liberty.
LSU senior Sylvia Fowles was taken second by the Chicago Sky. Fowles. The 6-foot-6 center led the Lady Tigers to four straight Final Fours. Stanford star Candice Wiggins went third to the Minnesota Lynx.
