Coach Bruce Pearl & His Wife File For Divorce

University of Tennessee men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl has filed for divorce from his wife after 25 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences.

“This is a very difficult time for my family and me,” Pearl said Monday in a statement. “It is my hope that everyone will understand that this is a personal matter and respect our privacy.”

He filed for divorce in Knox County on Sept. 10, two days before the couple’s 25th anniversary. But Pearl, 47, didn’t discuss the move until Monday because one of their four children had a birthday late last week.

Pearl separated from his 50-year-old wife, Kim, when the coach and the Vols returned from an 11-day trip to Europe that ended Aug. 19. She didn’t accompany the team on the trip.

He was named the Southeastern Conference coach of the year for the 2005-06 season, and his Vols reached the regional semifinals in the NCAA tournament in March. Pearl said he does not plan any more statements about the divorce.

Coach Pearl is about to enter his 16th season as a basketball coach ... his total record is 339-92, 78.5%. Pearl is 22-8 in two previous season with Tennessee, 77.3%.

A native of Boston, Mass., Pearl received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Boston College in 1982, graduating cum laude. His wife, Kim, is the niece of college coaching great Norm Sloan. In May 2005 she received a nursing degree from UW-Milwaukee. The couple has two daughters, Jacqui and Leah, and two sons, Steven and Michael.

You'll recall, Tennessee Women’s Basketball Coach Pat Summitt filed for divorce Aug. 15, a few days short of her 27th anniversary, and also cited irreconcilable differences.
