KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (school release) -- Austin Peay scored the game's final eight points to pull off a 74-70 upset win over Tennessee on Saturday afternoon. Josh Terry (20 points) hit a lay-up with 1:05 left for the go-ahead basket for the Govs (2-9).
Tennessee (3-5) was led by Jeronne Maymon (18 points, nine rebounds) and Kenny Hall (12 points, 10 rebounds).
This was Austin Peay's first-ever win against the Vols in nine attempts, dating to the start of the series in 1940.
Terry's reverse lay-up with 1:05 remaining gave Austin Peay its first lead since the game's opening minutes at 71-70. UT's Cameron Tatum had a shot blocked by Melvin Baker with 51 seconds left as Terry grabbed the defensive rebound for the Govs. After a pair of timeouts by Austin Peay, the Govs' Tyshawn Edmondson (19 points) hit a runner in the lane with 15.7 seconds left with the shot clock winding down for a three-point point at 73-70.
Trae Golden missed a 25-foot 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining as the Govs corralled the rebound. Terry made the second of two free throws for the final of 74-70.
The Vols head back on the road for a game at the College of Charleston (7-1) on Wednesday, Dec. 14. The game will tip at 9 p.m., on ESPN2. Tennessee's next home game is slated for Dec. 20 vs. UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
