Chicago, IL--(WVLT), Saturday's win at the All State Arena was the 110th in NCAA Tiournament history for pat's Lady Vols, right now though, it's number 111 the Ladies are worried about and standing in the way is this weekend's host team,Depaul a team the Lady Vols defeated back in December at madison Square Garden."
Assistant coach Dean Lockwood says, " I think we're much better defensively, I think they're a much more cohesive group I think roles a little bit better defined." Points guard and Ilinois native Ariel Massengale agrees, saying, "It was a great game at Madison Square Garden, they played hard, they have some players out now that played in the game, we have some players back that didn't play, it should be a good one."
The Blue Deamons turned back BYU lSaturday night 59-55 as four players finished in double figures. The Lady Vols will be looking for that kind of balance after attempting 27 three pointers in their first round win over UT-Martin.
Alicia Manning says, " their main player, Keysha Johnson got hurt so they're down to two true posts, so we're really going to have to take advantage of our post game." Senior Glory Johnson adds, "it's all about locking down on defense, rebounding and being a Tennessee team."
Depaul brings a little more size to the table, but as Meighan Simmons pointed out , the size of the heart within is what matters and that is never more evident than this time of year.
Certainly still providing ther heart and motivation for her players, although in a different role right now is the legend, Pat Summitt. Associate head coach continues to stand up for her mentor saying, "
Pat is doing more individual stuff , she loves that, it's so good for her, so she's taking the opportunity to take these kids individually and help them and start motivating them you still see Pat's energy and her competitiveness in these kids in these kids, it's a great tribute to her and to these young ladies who continue to fight every day on the basketball court."
As difficult as it is to think about, the next loss could be the last one for Pat Summitt as Lady Vol head coach. When asked Sunday about possibly being the last person to coach against Pat, Depaul coach Doug Bruno responded, " never ever has it entered my mind whatsover, when the time comes and she's no longer in the game, then the time will comes when she's no longer in the game, I've never even thought about that."
Coach Bruno's Blue Deamons have never beaten Tennessee, failing in 19 tries. The coach prefers to look at that as being schooled and not defeated. The Lady Vols are hoping pupil isn't ready to surpass teacher just yet!
