Catchings, Parker Chosen As WNBA All-Star Game Starters

(UNDATED) Former Lady Vols Tamika Catchings and Candace Parker have been voted into starting roles for the upcoming WNBA All-Star Game.

The Connecticut Sun will host the Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star Game for the third time in franchise history on Saturday, July 27. ABC will broadcast the game live at 3:30 p.m. ET from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Catchings, who plays for the defending WNBA champion Indiana Fever, will make her eighth appearance in the WNBA All-Star Game and will start in the frontcourt for the Eastern Conference. The 2011 WNBA MVP and 2012 WNBA Finals MVP has been voted as a starter for every All-Star game since her rookie season.

Catchings will join leading vote-getter Elena Delle Donne (Chicago), Cappie Pondexter (New York), Epiphanny Prince (Chicago) and Angel McCoughtry (Atlanta) in the starting five for the East.

Parker, meanwhile, was chosen to start for the Western Conference for her outstanding play with the Los Angeles Sparks this season. She earned her second bid to the contest and hopes to make her first playing appearance after being unable to compete in 2011 due to injury.

The 2008 WNBA MVP, Parker topped the Western Conference and ranked second overall behind Delle Donne in total votes received with 33,810. Joining her in the lineup will be Brittney Griner (Phoenix), Maya Moore (Minnesota), Diana Taurasi (Phoenix) and Seimone Augustus (Minnesota).

The 12 WNBA head coaches will select the reserves by voting for six players within their own conference, including two guards and four frontcourt players. Coaches are not permitted to vote for players on their own team. The league will announce the reserves during a nationally televised game between the Liberty and the Fever on ESPN2, Tuesday, July 23 at 7 p.m. ET.

Replacement players, who will take the roster spot of players who cannot play due to injury, will be named by WNBA President Laurel J. Richie. Any changes to the starting lineup necessitated by injury will be made by the head coach of the respective All-Star team.

By virtue of winning their respective conference titles last season, Indiana head coach Lin Dunn will coach the Eastern Conference, and the Western Conference will be led by Minnesota’s Cheryl Reeve.

Individual tickets are available to the general public at Ticketmaster locations, including by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or online at ticketmaster.com or connecticutsun.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the Mohegan Sun Box Office from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
