KNOXVILLE (WVLT) -- Bruce Pearl's future at Tennessee is still up in the air, according to statements made by Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton during an interview on WNML.

Hamilton said he isn't sure whether Pearl will be the Vols' coach next season.

"We don’t know the answer today," Hamilton said. "We’ve done a lot of soul searching about the direction of our program and we’ll continue to do that and we’ll decide after we’re out of the NCAA Tournament what direction it is that we’re going to go next.

"That’ll be a decision we make in the short term or we’ll wait and make it a little bit further down the road," Hamilton said. "But the jury is out on what’s going to happen with that at this point. … He knows that, by the way."

Pearl has been working without a contract since the old deal was nullified after he confessed to lying to the NCAA.

Hello Mr. Hamilton, just remember this. "Let Ye with no sin cast the first stone" I would highly dislike it if you fire Coach Pearl. After Lane Kiffen, I wish UT would dismiss you... The Tennessee Vol Fans love him and want him to stay. So if you don't want to get dismissed yourself(and it can happen), keep Coach Pearl. Now lets take our punishment, learn our lesson and get back to being Tennessee Volunteers!!!

Hopefully someone of good morale values and character will do the right thing and terminate Mike Hamilton for his irresponsible statements. For someone of his position and supposed caliber should have better class and level of integrity than what he has demonstrated now on multiple occasions. Perhaps he should use a dictionary and look up the word edification. Instead of building up their morale and confidence he destroys it with his mouth right before their NCAA tournament opening game. In my humble opinion, he is a moron and should be terminated as the Athletic Director.

I was stunned to hear Hamilton’s comments the day before the tournament. What on earth was he thinking? As a (highly paid) Manager, Hamilton knows he should not discuss an employee’s future until an official decision is made. Given the high profile of this saga, folks who are much higher up the ladder will get a vote in the decision, so Hamilton was way out of line with his statements. His only comments during the interview should have reflected his excitement and pride in the Vols for making the tournament. Where is Hamilton’s support for the players? UT’s loss today is 51% on Hamilton’s shoulders. A third grader could have predicted the consequences of the AD’s comments. And as for Hamilton’s ‘apology’ to Pearl, the bell’s been rung, the genie’s out of the bottle, you can’t have a do-over, and ‘Sorry’ doesn’t cut it. Fire Hamilton, give Pearl a long-term contract, and find a new AD who will support the athletic programs and student athletes.

They should fire Hamilton instead. To say something like that right before their opening game in the NCAA tournament is absolutely moronic. He literally knocked the wind out of the Vols judging by the poor play against Michigan today. If he does'nt have any more sense than that, he should'nt be the athletic director.

I believe that UT should consider the dismissal of Mike Hamilton. Yes, Bruce Pearl has made serious mistakes, but never has he stooped so low as to undercut the University of Tn. as the remarks that Mike Hamilton made during the WNML interview did. When he should have been supporting the Men's basketball team and their bid in the NCAA tournament he was making critical remarks againist the coach who has taken the team to the tournament 6 out of 6 years as a coach. Hamilton certainly did not have the best interests of the team and fans at the forefront. The team and Coach Pearl should have been allowed to go into the tournament with their focus ONLY on the upcoming game. With an Athletic Director like this, who needs enemies! No wonder the players lost heart during the game!

The people posting on here have zero clue on what it takes to compete athletically at the college level. Who cares when he made the comments? It doesnt matter. People outside of UT hate Pearl becasue he is an unethical loser. Look it up. If the players cant get up for march madness, then that is not Mike Hamiltons problem. Another reason to get rid of Pearl and start over. The guy is a cancer to the college.
