Johnson named SEC player of the week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Lady Vol junior Glory Johnson was named the SEC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Johnson led No. 4 Tennessee to a 2-1 record at the Paradise Jam at the University of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas, USV, Iast week. She was named to the “Reef Division” all-tournament team after averaging 11.7 ppg, 13.0 rpg and shooting 61.1 percent from the field at the three-day competition.

After tallying seven points and nine boards to open the tournament on Thursday in a 82-44 win over Missouri, the 6-3 forward recorded back-to-back double-doubles to close the weekend.

Johnson grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds to go along with a game-high 15 points in a 66-42 win over Georgia Tech on Friday, and scored 13 points and snagged 12 boards on Saturday in a 69-58 loss to No. 12/13 Georgetown.

For the season, Johnson is averaging 9.4 ppg and 10.6 rpg and has three double-doubles in her last four games.

The Knoxville, native, is on pace to become the first Lady Vol since Patricia Roberts (14.2 rpg) in 1976-77 to average double figures on the boards for a season.

This is Johnson’s third career SEC weekly honor. She was named SEC Freshman of the Week twice in 2008-09.

Johnson Also Selected as CAREacter Star Athlete of the Week

In addition to her conference honor, Johnson was also named the Lady Vols’ CAREacter Star Athlete of the Week. The CAREacter Program is based on a five-point star system that includes the basic traits of a true champion, whether on or off the field. Those traits are attitude character, grades, community service and performance.

The Lady Vols return to action this Wednesday when they host Lamar at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Boling Arena.
