Ariel Massengale dislocates finger in practice

Jenny Moshak, University of Tennessee Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, announced this evening that Lady Vol basketball point guard Ariel Massengale suffered a dislocated finger in practice and would be out for two to three weeks.

“Ariel injured the middle finger on her left hand in practice this afternoon after going for a loose ball,” Moshak said. “Typically, this type of injury takes between 14-21 days to heal.”

Just this week, the rookie from Bolingbrook, Ill., collected the first conference honors of her collegiate career as she was named SEC Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week following her outstanding performance in UT's wins over Middle Tennessee and (then) No. 20/21-ranked Texas.

Massengale averaged 12.0 ppg and 5.0 apg, giving up only one turnover while playing 25.0 minutes per game in the victories over the Blue Raiders and the Longhorns. Against Middle Tennessee, she posted her career best in points (14) and tied her best performance in rebounds (4), while committing zero turnovers in the 82-43 win.

Following her solid game against the Blue Raiders, Massengale recorded her third double-digit scoring effort of the season in the 73-57 victory over Texas on Sunday. She finished with 10 points, five assists and two steals against the Longhorns.

On the season, Massengale is averaging 7.2 ppg and 5.8 apg for the No. 7/8-ranked Lady Vols.

This weekend, Tennessee travels to New York City to face No. 20/21-ranked DePaul on Dec. 11 at 1:30 p.m. (ESPNU) in the Maggie Dixon Classic at Madison Square Garden. Two days later, UT travels to face No. 11-ranked Rutgers on their home floor in a 7 p.m. tilt on ESPN.
