McRae earns first career SEC Player of the Week award

After averaging 22.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.0 assists in wins over The Citadel and Tennessee State, Tennessee senior Jordan McRae has been named the SEC Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

The award marks the first SEC weekly honor of McRae’s career.

The Midway, Ga., native shot 64 percent from the field (16-of-25) and 55.6 percent from three-point range (5-of-9) in UT’s two triumphs last week while leading the Volunteers in scoring in both games. He also tallied five blocked shots, including three against The Citadel.

McRae – who appears on both the John R. Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy watch lists – currently ranks second in the SEC in scoring (21.5 ppg), fifth in assist/turnover ratio (2.4), sixth in 3-point shooting (.450) and 10th in blocked shots (1.5 bpg).

Dating to last season, McRae has led the Vols in scoring in nine of their last 12 games. He is just 85 points shy of becoming the 45th all-time member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club.

Monday’s honor marks the eighth SEC weekly award received by a Vol during the tenure of third-year head coach Cuonzo Martin.
