Source: UT and Bruce Pearl parting ways

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Tennessee and Coach Bruce Pearl are parting ways, sources close to the program report.

Pearl's termination comes in the wake of his September admission that he broke NCAA rules, then lied to investigators about his illegal behavior.

The University of Tennessee received a letter of allegations from the NCAA in February accusing Pearl and his assistants of committing several major violations.

Further questions over Pearl's future began to swirl on the eve of the NCAA Tournament when athletic director Mike Hamilton said during a radio interview that he wasn't sure whether Pearl will be the Vols' coach next season.

Pearl leaves Tennessee after six seasons of unprecedented on-court success. He led the Vols to six consecutive NCAA tournaments and five 20-win seasons.

The Vols ranked in the top five nationally in attendance during Pearl's tenure. Every player who spent four years in Pearl's program received a college degree.

Pearl took Tennessee to the Elite Eight in 2010 for the first time in school history. But ultimately, the NCAA issues proved to difficult for the coach to overcome.

UT has made another mistake. There is not one person Hamilton, Cheek or whoever, who has not made an error in judgement. The sanctions are not going away with firing Coach Pearl. Some university is chomping at the bit to hire him for their team now that UT has showed how little loyality (again) that they have. You can write the UT men's basketball program. The students won't come and alot of fans will not come. The money Hamilton has wasted on his watch would pay for several hundred students tuition.

UT has made a big mistake. Mike Hamilton is the one who should be fired. Pearl made a mistake and has paid dearly for it. No one in life is perfect. Timing was way off as it was with Fulmer. It's past time to get rid of Hamilton.

Scotty is going pro along with Tobias. Our two signees have asked out of their commitments. Good job Cheek and Hamilton. You both need to go. I have a new name for Thompson Bowling Arena. "Bill Haslem's Big Old Empty Building. I am shaped like a basketball but became interested in basketball due to Bruce Pearl. No longer. We are on our 3rd football coach (Gutless Hamilton's second hire), Our third basketball coach (Gutless Cheek's second hire), and our second baseball coach (Gutless Hamilton's first hire and Raleigh hasn't produced anything yet). You wanna go for another hire Gutless. Even Sports Animal gave Hamilton an F for his hiring. Football is in trouble with the NCAA just like basketball, just not as severly. I demand, yes demand, the resignation of Mike Hamilton. Do we have any Trustees that have any guts to stand up to this Gutless Hamilton and Cheek. I only wish we had some students that would demonstrate like they would in my day.

Mike hamilton made a terrible choice to announce the potential firing of Bruce on Friday before the mens game, and then announce today before the women's game that he is fired. Does he think this does not have an impact on the coaches and players. Give the women the credit they deserve tonight on there win, and not have it all be about Bruce. We traveled 8 hours to hear about and see the Lady Vols, not about Mike Hamilton and Bruce.

I think the big money backers of the UT athletic program need to pull together & see that Mike Hamilton is sent down the road. He's over it & there has been too many problems under his watch. Coach Pearl admitted his mistake & paid for it. I thought that was how our system worked.
