Source: UT and Bruce Pearl parting ways

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Tennessee and Coach Bruce Pearl are parting ways, sources close to the program report.

Pearl's termination comes in the wake of his September admission that he broke NCAA rules, then lied to investigators about his illegal behavior.

The University of Tennessee received a letter of allegations from the NCAA in February accusing Pearl and his assistants of committing several major violations.

Further questions over Pearl's future began to swirl on the eve of the NCAA Tournament when athletic director Mike Hamilton said during a radio interview that he wasn't sure whether Pearl will be the Vols' coach next season.

Pearl leaves Tennessee after six seasons of unprecedented on-court success. He led the Vols to six consecutive NCAA tournaments and five 20-win seasons.

The Vols ranked in the top five nationally in attendance during Pearl's tenure. Every player who spent four years in Pearl's program received a college degree.

Pearl took Tennessee to the Elite Eight in 2010 for the first time in school history. But ultimately, the NCAA issues proved to difficult for the coach to overcome.
