Stokes, USA U19 team onto semifinals

Knoxville, Tenn.--(UTSports) Canada was the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team’s latest victim at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, as the undefeated U.S. squad posted a 109-67 quarterfinal win over its northern neighbor Friday at O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic.

The United States faces Lithuania (6-1) Saturday in the semifinals. The other semifinal matchup pits Serbia (6-1) vs. Australia (4-3) – both of which have already suffered losses to the Americans (7-0) in Prague.

Tennessee rising junior Jarnell Stokes had eight points and five rebounds in 10 minutes played Friday. He shot 3-of-4 from the field to boost his tournament shooting percentage to .611.

“Canada really came out ready to play,” Stokes said. “Although we won by a large amount, we will have to play better to win in the next round.”

The Memphis, Tenn., native has started every game for Team USA at the championship. Through seven games, he is averaging 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds while playing 12.3 minutes per contest.

He also pulls down 2.3 offensive rebounds per game.

The Canadians had no answer for the American frontcourt Friday. The U.S. finished with a 51-27 edge in rebounding while outscoring Canada 62-34 in the paint.

Team USA took a 53-38 lead into halftime and then pulled away by outscoring the Canadians 31-12 in the third quarter.
