Tatum gets workout with Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Former Tennessee basketball player Cameron Tatum said last Monday at the Pilot Rocky Top League that he was 'just waiting for a phone call.'

A phone call from his agent saying he had landed on a European basketball roster.

Tatum received a basketball call. It just wasn't about playing for a team overseas.

"Man, it's a dream come true for me," Tatum said after working out for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies.

It was Tatum's first, and only, workout for an NBA club.

"Basketball is my life. If I don't get drafted, if I don't get picked up by free agency, as long as I've got a game of basketball I'm fine."

"I didn't have any butterflies. I was just really excited about this opportunity really. I'm happy I got the opportunity to come out here and play. Just try to take advantage of it," Tatum said.

It's not expected Tatum will be selected when Thursday's NBA draft takes place in Newark, New Jersey.

It's what's down the road that Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace is more interested.

"I don't think he'll get drafted this week," Wallace said Monday. "But you never know. He might go into the minor leagues, or the international scene, and come back in a few years. It's good to have an inventory on a variety of players, even with those that we may not necessarily draft or even get drafted."

Tatum played in all 34 games this past season for the Vols. He averaged 8.1 points and 4.1 rebounds a game.
