UT coaching staff taking part in suits and sneakers awareness weekend

Knoxville, Tenn.--(UTSports) Tennessee basketball coach Cuonzo Martin and his staff are participating in the Coaches vs. Cancer Suits And Sneakers Awareness Weekend by wearing adidas sneakers during Saturday’s game at sixth-ranked Florida (4 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Martin is a cancer survivor, having triumphed in his battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. His professional basketball playing career was cut short when a malignant tumor was found between his heart and lungs. He received his last treatment on April 20, 1998, and is now in full remission.

Tennessee has won both of its Suits And Sneakers Awareness Weekend games under Martin. The Volunteers posted home wins over Auburn (2012) and Alabama (2013) while supporting the cause the past two seasons.

The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). The initiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership and professional excellence of coaches nationwide. The program seeks to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living among students, faculty and staff, fans and the community at large.

Since its inception in 1993, the American Cancer Society Coaches vs. Cancer initiative has raised more than $87 million to support the Society’s mission.

Between now and the Final Four, coaches and fans are on a mission to raise $400,000 in the fight to end cancer. In raising $400K, the American Cancer Society can continue critical work such as promoting screening to find cancer early, conducting research into cancer’s causes and cures, and providing free services to people who are battling cancer so they can focus on getting well, all of which have helped decrease cancer death rates by 20 percent over the past two decades.
