Vols suffer 92-74 defeat to Ole Miss

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Ole Miss won in Knoxville for the first time since 1991 as the Rebels handed Tennessee a 92-74 defeat on Wednesday night in the conference opener for both teams. The Vols had won 11 consecutive games at home in the series since falling 93-88 on Feb. 27, 1991.
The loss dropped the Vols to 8-5 overall as UT finished its six-game homestand 4-2.
Ole Miss, the leading scoring team in the SEC, moved to 12-2 to equal its best start since 2009-10.
The SEC's leading scorer Marshall Henderson tallied a career-high 32 points for Ole Miss. Two Rebels had double-doubles as Murphy Holloway had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Reginald Buckner had 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Jarvis Summers added 16.
Jordan McRae led the Vols in scoring for the second game in a row with a career-high for the second game in a row with 26 as he returned to the starting lineup.
Jarnell Stokes had his fifth career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Rebels outrebounded the Vols, 47-32.
Ole Miss had an advantage at the free-throw line as the Rebels went 38-of-44 from the stripe for 86.4 percent. The free throws made and attempted set records for the most by an opponent in Thompson-Boling Arena history.
Tennessee lost a conference opener for just the third time in its last 14 lid-lifters.
Down by 12 early in the second half, the Vols chipped away early in the second half. McRae's 3-pointer with 13 minutes left, cut the deficit to five at 53-48.
But, Ole Miss used a 6-0 run to regain a double-figure lead at 61-50 on floater by Henderson with 10:55 left.
The Rebels took a 16-point lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Henderson with 9:19 left, putting Ole Miss ahead 69-53.
Tennessee responded with consecutive treys by Derek Reese and McRae to make it 69-59 Ole Miss.
Ole Miss continued to keep the Vols at bay. Henderson added the final blow on a 3-pointer with five minutes left as he surpassed his previous career-high of 27. That gave the Rebels a 79-64 lead.
The Rebels continued to hold the secure lead the rest of the way.
The Rebels scored the first four points after halftime to take the first double-figure lead of the game, going up 42-30.
Ole Miss led the Vols, 38-30 at halftime. Holloway (13) and Henderson (10) led the scoring. Stokes had 10 for the Vols.
The Rebels took a nine-point lead midway through the half at 24-15 on a pair of foul shots by Henderson.
At halftime, the athletic department recognized the Stokely Family as the building, bearing their name -- that was the former home of the Vols -- the Stokely Athletic Center, closed its doors at the end of 2012.
Tennessee will play its first road game in more than a month as the Vols head to Alabama for a Saturday showdown in Tuscaloosa. The game tips at 1 p.m., and will air on ESPN2 and can be heard on the Vol Network.
