Vols coach glad to be spared NCAA postseason ban

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee coach Cuonzo (KAHN'-zoh) Martin says he's glad the NCAA investigation into Volunteers' athletics has ended and that it came with no postseason ban for his team.

The NCAA was investigating the Vols basketball program for recruiting violations committed under previous coach Bruce Pearl, who was fired in March.

Martin said Friday he received a lot of questions about possible sanctions from the parents and coaches of recruits this summer and would tell them he did not know what would happen.

The NCAA did not punish Tennessee beyond what the penalties self-imposed by the program, which include two years' probation and some limits on recruiting. The NCAA hit Pearl with a three-year show-cause penalty, which will make it nearly impossible for another school to hire him during that time.
