USC announced the firing of Lane Kiffin early Sunday morning, following the Trojans' 62-41 loss to Arizona State. The embattled Kiffin was 4-7 in his last 11 games, including 3-2 this year. Kiffin exits with a four-year record of 28-15.
A USC news release said athletic director Pat Haden informed Kiffin of his termination upon the team charter's arrival back in Los Angeles early Sunday morning.
According to a university release, Haden will hold a press conference at USC Sunday afternoon at a time and place to be announced.
Kiffin left for Southern Cal and his so called "dream job" after just one season at Tennessee. He was hired by then Athletics Director Mike Hamilton to replace the terminated Phillip Fulmer.
His one season on the Hill was at turbulent one with several off the field incidents.
On February 5, 2009, Kiffin accused Urban Meyer, then head coach of the Florida Gators and currently head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, of violating NCAA recruiting rules while at a Tennessee booster breakfast at the Knoxville Convention Center.
While Kiffin accused Meyer of violating NCAA rules, he incidentally violated a Southeastern Conference rule that prevented coaches from mentioning a recruit by name, and his accusations against Meyer were mistaken. Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive issued a public reprimand to Kiffin due to the comment.
There was the single car accident at 2 or 3 in the morning in which the coach crashed a Lexus and then left the scene without reporting the incident, an incident that was later confirmed by the University.
Then of course, there was the infamous Orange Pride debacle in which Kiffin’s coaches paid the hostesses to entertain and “flirt with” recruits. It's a situation which eventually landed the football program on probation.
Kiffin's departure for USC in 2010 left UT students quite angry!Hundreds of students rioted on campus at the news of Kiffin's departure. Knoxville police and fire department were brought in after students blocked the exit from the Neyland Thompson Sports Center and started several small fires.
