CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - As the Tennessee Volunteers prepare to head to "The Swamp" we take a look back at one of the most exciting games in the storied rivalry.
In 1971, UT was tied with the Gators at 13-13 in the third quarter when Florida pinned a punt on the 1 inch line. What followed was a 99.5 yard touchdown drive that gave the Volunteers the 20-13 lead and the win.
The quarterback that day was Phil Pierce. He led the Vols on that incredible drive, finishing it off with a 20-Yard touchdown pass to Stan Trott.
The memories from that day still live on with Pierce, now the Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Averitt Express. "I'll never forget, walking off the field... Coach Dickey was in front of me. Of course he recruited me and all my guys in my Senior class. I spoke to him, or hollered at him. He turned around and congratulated me and he said 'son, this will be one you'll never forget.' And he was right."
