Updated: Tennessee loses two more assistant football coaches

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The University of Tennessee has confirmed that defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox and linebacker coach Peter Sirmon are leaving to take similar positions at the University of Washington.

These departures mark the third and fourth coaching changes since the Vols lost to Kentucky on November 26th.

Wide receivers coach Charlie Baggett stepped away from the program in early December.

Also last month, special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Eric Russell left Tennessee to take a similar post at Washington State.

Head coach Derek Dooley has already hired Jay Graham away from South Carolina to coach running backs next year.

When asked about the coaching departures Monday night, coupled with a pair of recruits decommitting from UT, Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart didn't view the recent developments as negative news for the program. Hart instead said it's just the way things are this time of year.

"It's football. It's college football. If you look around our own conference, there are a lot of people replacing assistant coaches. It's simply that time of year," Hart said before the Vols basketball game against UT-Chattanooga.

"The way I've always viewed that administratively, and I'm sure that Derek (Dooley) very much feels the same way, is that every time you have to go out and seek someone, it's an opportunity. It's an opportunity to get better and that's how we'll view it."
