Streak over, season over: Kentucky beats Vols, 10-7

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WVLT/AP) -- Kentucky beat Tennessee 10-7 Saturday afternoon at Commonwealth Stadium.

The win for the Wildcats was the first over the Vols since 1984. Tennessee had entered the game beating Kentucky 26 times in a row. It was the nation's longest active winning streak against one team in a regularly played series.

CoShik Williams ran for a touchdown and senior wide receiver Matt Roark filled in at quarterback with 124 yards on 24 carries to spur Kentucky's historic win.

The win capped a disappointing season for the Wildcats (5-7, 2-6 Southeastern Conference) and kept Tennessee (5-7, 1-7) from reaching bowl eligibility with representatives from the Liberty Bowl on hand.

Kentucky's game plan was clear from the start to win for the first time in the series since 1984.

The Wildcats weren't going to be able to throw much with Roark, but instead tried to run misdirection plays and catch Tennessee off-guard while relying on their improving defense.

It worked.

Roark led two scoring drives and Kentucky forced three turnovers, including a key one in a goal-line stand in the third quarter.

Tune into Local 8 News at 7pm as the WVLT sports team will have highlights and reaction from Lexington on this historic loss for the Vols.

after the loss dooley said we had a bad football team and going to a bowl game would not have helped. but thats why he was hired was to win games. kiffen led ut to a bowl game almost beat the champs bama that year and dooley has not done anything since hes been hear except blame his team. he needs to put the blame on himself and admitt he did not do a good job these last two yars its time for him to go and ut to get a real coach who atleast beat ky and blow out vandy.

I am not a Dooley fan but the man had nothing to coach thanks to Hamilton's friend, Lane Kiffin. This year was a disaster no question but it also involved many key injuries along with many freshmen and their error prone ways. We have no beef up front on either side of the line to sustain anything especially against the likes of LSU and Alabama. Did we get out coached-yes many days we were outcoached and I believe some of the staff must go but not the "Good Ol Boy" Dooley who was hired on his father's reputation. But legendary coaches had bad years so hang in folks we'll get a legendary coach sooner or later. All you anti-Fulmer people I hope you are proud of what you did a few years ago. I know LSU is happy we obliterated our football powerhouse. I wish John the nest in getting his National Championship ring again this year.

dooley and his staff have coached 25 games. well, there is no difference from game 1 to game 25. dooley and his coaching staff are confused about big time confrence football. this isn't the wac, this is the sec. when dooley said in his press confrence that we are a bad team and we need to go and rebuild, what has he been doin the past two seasons ? i don't think he or his coachin staff knows what to do.. if he can't win 8 games or more next year, it's time to go. he can't use that we are young slogan next year........

I like dooley personally and his intentions are great but i have to say as far as coaching goes Im afraid he doesnt have the talent. I think we better fix this mistake before its too late! We have actually gotten worse as the season progressed????? Coaching

I AM a die hard football fan and I have never been so shocked in my life! I would like to hear Tyler Bray's smart comments now! Last week he ran his mouth, looks like it was all in vain!(Bray - watch film before you open your mouth) And very bad coaching! I have really supported Dooley and not sure where the problem lies but if we need a whole new staff, DO IT WHILE WE HAVE TIME TO REGROUP!!! HERE IS TO HOPE FOR VOL FUTURE!

I live in Ky and I am a Ky Fan. I have been hearing all the Ky fans bloating today. This win is just luck. Ky has no football this year, and has not in a long time. So good luck and see you next year.

The coaching of that game was terrible. That game could have been won if the coaching staff would have made the right calls at the right time, too bad for the players.

I've witnessed some pretty poor UT football games over the past 50+ years but never one as pitiful as this. They looked and played like they just wanted the season over. Getting beat by a Kentucky team without a quarterback! How embarrassing!
