KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT-TV) -- For the second time in two weeks, the Tennessee football team has taken a hit at defensive tackle.
UT athletic department spokesperson Jimmy Stanton confirmed to WVLT-TV Monday evening that, "at this point," Rae Sykes is no longer on the team because of academic reasons.
Earlier this month, defensive tackle Montori Hughes was dismissed from the program, also because of academic reasons.
The 6'2", 275 pound Sykes played in eight games last season, registering three tackles.
Sykes signed with the Vols out of powerhouse Alcoa High School in 2007, but he first attended Coffeyville Community College in Kansas because he did not qualify.
Sykes then resigned with the Vols in 2009.
