Vols' Corey Vereen out roughly five weeks

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee defensive end Corey Vereen is expected to miss at least five weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Coach Butch Jones said Friday it's difficult to put a specific timetable on Vereen's return because players heal at different paces. Vereen underwent surgery Thursday.

Vereen, a freshman who enrolled at Tennessee in January, had four sacks in the spring game. Defensive line coach Steve Stripling has called Vereen "one of the highest-motivated young men I've ever seen."

Vereen is one of two Tennessee defensive ends to get injured this week. Jones said Wednesday that senior Jacques Smith was expected to miss four to six weeks with a fractured right thumb.

Tennessee opens the season Aug. 31 against Austin Peay.
