Assistant Sports Director

Daryl Hobby is the Assistant Sports Director who anchors the weekend sportscasts and reports during the week.

He's a Blount County native who says he's happy and fortunate to be making a living in East Tennessee. However, before working in the shadows of Neyland Stadium, Daryl's career took plenty of twists and turns.

Prior to arriving at WVLT in 2005, he was in Jonesboro, Ark., where he was KAIT's sports director for nearly five years. There he received numerous Associated Press awards for Best Sportscast, Best Sports Reporting and Best Sports Special. He was also nominated for an Emmy award for his report on a female pole vaulter who made the Olympic team.

Daryl was also part of launching FOX 43 in Knoxville in 1998 where he covered the Vols' national championship in Tempe. His on-air career began in the Kirksville, Mo./Ottumwa, Ia.,market where he was KTVO's weekend sports anchor.

Daryl's career has taken him not just to the Vols' 1998 national championship game in Tempe, but to two Super Bowls (35 and 41), the Final Four, and the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

While at WVLT, Daryl's covered major stories like Phillip Fulmer's firing (which included a memorable, live interview with the legendary Johnny Majors), Lane Kiffin's middle-of-the-night departure, and Bruce Pearl's infamous backyard barbecue. However, it's the stories of those athletes that aren't making national news that he enjoys telling the most.

Daryl's a 1993 graduate of Heritage High School in Blount County and a 1997 graduate of the University of Tennessee.

Away from work, his biggest joy is being Dylan's dad. He also enjoys golfing, fishing, playing cards, road trips, movies, and his DVR.

Daryl's always open to any story ideas you think East Tennessee should know about - you can email him or you can follow him on Twitter or Facebook (use the icons to click through).
