SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- The National Hurricane Center says a subtropical storm called Beryl is crawling nearer to the U.S. Southeast coast and is expected to make for a rainy finish to the long Memorial Day weekend on beaches from north Florida to South Carolina.

The Miami-based center said Beryl is a cluster of thunderstorms that was centered at 2 a.m. EDT Sunday about 185 miles (300 kms) southeast of Charleston, S.C. The storm system has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) and was moving to the west-southwest at 7 mph (11 kph).

Forecaster say the storm is expected to make landfall Sunday night or Monday.
