SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- The National Hurricane Center says a subtropical storm called Beryl is crawling nearer to the U.S. Southeast coast and is expected to make for a rainy finish to the long Memorial Day weekend on beaches from north Florida to South Carolina.

The Miami-based center said Beryl is a cluster of thunderstorms that was centered at 2 a.m. EDT Sunday about 185 miles (300 kms) southeast of Charleston, S.C. The storm system has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) and was moving to the west-southwest at 7 mph (11 kph).

Forecaster say the storm is expected to make landfall Sunday night or Monday.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect for the entire Georgia coastline, as well as parts of Florida and South Carolina, according to the hurricane center.
