KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)--After investigators discovered a sex offender in Powell High School we wanted to know who is responsible for a sex offender being on school property.

We talked to five school districts who say sex offenders aren't allowed on the property.

But if it's a non-school sponsored activity, schools aren't responsible for students.

So that leaves you, the parents, to make sure your child is safe.

You can start protecting them by getting on the sex offender registry website.

It's an online database with names and address of a sex offender, plus their crime.

It's an easy way to spot sex offenders, like Jeffrey Donald Keith, who was sentenced in 1998 for aggravated sexual battery of a 10 year old girl.

Joan Berry, the mother of Johnia Berry who was murdered several years ago in Knoxville, says you need to safe guard your children against predators.

Joan Berry says, "What does a sex offender look like? You don't really know. It could be anyone. You really need to talk to your children about safety and check out to see who lives around you."
