COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT)-- The District Attorney's Office in Greenville has reported robbery may be the motive for the murder of Terrence Stewart, 21, and Cortney Thompson, 20.

A man found the couple's bodies under the US Highway 321/Newport Highway bridge early Sunday morning. Authorities said Thompson and Stewart were shot.

The investigation is centered in Cocke County where the couple lived. They moved to Uptown Rentals the same week they were killed.

It was also a community Stewart's father served. His dad, Capt. Terry Stewart, was a Newport Police Officer for 30 years. He retired in 2008.

Newport's Police Chief Maurice Shults said both of the families are doing their best to cope with what's happened.

"Their hearts are broken but they're relying on their faith and family, and trying their best to pull through this thing," Chief Shults said. "They want justice and they want those responsible brought in front of the judicial system."

TBI, Cocke County Sheriff's Department and the Greene County Sheriff's Department are working on any leads.

Thompson's car was found Monday morning, but they're still trying to locate Stewart's 2000 Honda Accord.

Anyone with any information can call the Greene County Sheriff's Department at 423-798-1800, the Cocke County Sheriff’s Department at 423-623-3064, or the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND.
