A LOCAL 8 WEATHER ALERT continues in the Smokies. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 4 p.m., due to continued snowfall, with 1 - 3" possible. This also applies to farther Northeastern Tennessee, so I-40 at the NC line and I-81 into the Tri-Cities can have hazard road conditions at times. The Plateau and Southeastern Kentucky have on and off snow showers.
MADISONVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Clean up is underway in Monroe County after strong storms blew through East Tennessee Thursday night.
TEMA declared a state of emergency there after reports of storm damage and a possible tornado.
One home there was reportedly damaged by strong winds moving through the area. It happened around 8:30 p.m. near Community Drive and Hill Loop Road, according to people in the neighborhood. It appears the home suffered some roof damage.
County Emergency Management Director Brian Turpin said about 8-10 families have been displaced by the storm that hit the town of Madisonville and unincorporated parts of the county in the far-southeastern part of the state.
There are no reports of injuries.
Turpin said the county's 911 line has received multiple reports of damage to homes, barns and other structures. Trees also were downed throughout the county, causing about 2,500 people to lose power at one point.
Officials are investigating whether the damage was caused by a tornado.
