Early life

A New York City native, Dash bought sneakers and shirts as a teenager by sweeping floors and selling newspapers. His mother died at the age of 15 of an asthma attack, so, in his own words, he learned to hustle through her example. He was also diagnosed with type 1 diabetes that year. After being diagnosed, Dash recalled, he lost weight and went to the bathroom nonstop for a month or two.

Career

Damon Dash teamed up with Shawn Carter, a talented rapper from Brooklyn, in 1995 to launch Roc-A-Fella Records after receiving a lackluster response from major record labels.

Under the label, Jay-Z released his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, which sold 500,000 copies. Later, he struck a deal with Def Jam that brought on new artists such as Red Man, D.M.X., and Method Man.

After finding success at Roc-A-Fella, Damon Dash began experimenting with other ventures. He launched Roc-A-Fella Films in 1998, creating hip-hop documentaries like Backstage that helped expand his Net worth.

He and Jay-Z founded Rocawear in 1999, a hip-hop clothing line designed for urban males. In 2000, Rocawear reached a sales threshold of $100 million, putting it directly in competition with brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein.

Since selling out his stake in Rocawear in August 2005, he has been out of contact with the Roc-A-Fella empire. Later, he devoted most of his attention to managing his other business ventures, including Dash-DiBella Promotions, Tiret New York, Pro Keds, Armadale Vodka, etc.

Personal life/Relationship

Aaliyah was introduced to Dash through his accountant in New York City in the summer of 2000, where they dated until about two months before Aaliyah died in a plane crash on August 25, 2001. Even though the couple had not been formally engaged, Dash mentioned that the two planned to marry after Aaliyah’s death.

He then became in a relationship with Rachel Roy. During her internship at Rocawear, they became acquainted. They have two daughters, Tallulah Dash (born May 14, 2008) and Ava Dash (born December 7, 1999). A bitter custody battle followed their divorce in 2009.

Damon Dash has a son named Damon “Boogie” Dash, born on November 28, 1991, to a former girlfriend, Linda Williams. His son is also the star of the reality television series Growing Up Hip Hop. His other son, Lucky, was born to his wife Cindy Morales in 2004.

He is now married to Raquel Horn and was blessed with another son, Dusko Dash, on November 14, 2020.
