Jalen Anthony Rose was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 17, 1973. His father, Jimmy Walker, was drafted in the first round and even played Jerry West in the 1972 NBA All-Star game. Walker died in 2007 from lung cancer, but Jalen never met him in person; instead, they talked frequently over the phone. He was named Jalen by his mother, Jeanne, who believes it is a combination of his father’s name, and Jalen’s uncle, Leonard.

Career
Rose was drafted by six NBA clubs, which enabled him to skip his senior year at Michigan and pursue a professional career.
In the 1994 NBA draft, he was selected 13th overall by the Denver Nuggets. Jalen Rose and Reggie Williams were traded to the Indiana Pacers after two seasons with the Denver Nuggets.
Jalen was initially not accepted in Indiana, even though he was successful there.Â
