Joe Budden was born on August 31, 1980, in Harlem, New York, and relocated to New Jersey, with his mother and older brother when he was 13 years old.

His high school was Lincoln High School. Budden’s father was missing from his life as a child, a problem that he later addressed in his songs. He was sent to Laurinburg Institute, a boarding school in North Carolina, for his disobedience. It was there that he began honing his rapping skills.
