Early Life

Born on March 1, 1983, in Kangathei, Manipur, Mary Kom is the daughter of Tonpa Kom and Akham Kom. The Jhum fields were rented to Kom’s parents, who had low incomes. Growing up on a farm, her parents gave her the chance to master athletics at school. Mary’s father used to compete in wrestling when he was younger. Kom then turned to boxing.

Education

She attended Loktak Christian Model High School in Moirang during sixth grade. Following her eighth grade year, she enrolled at St. Xavier Catholic School in Moirang. At St. Xavier, she enjoyed running 400 metres and javelin.

One of the Manipur fighters, Dingko Singh, won a gold medal at the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1998. In Manipur, Mary was one of the many young people who were inspired to try boxing by her achievement.
