Early Life

Shaun King was born in Franklin County, Kentucky, on September 17th, 1979. He was raised by his mother, Naomi Kay King. Huntertown Elementary School was where he finished his education before moving to Woodford County High School.

While growing up in Kentucky, King claims that he was a victim of prejudice. On the school grounds, a group of kids was going to run over him with a vehicle. Even though the students complained to the school administration, they chose to side with them and did nothing. In his teenage years, he was severely abused by rednecks, which caused him to miss two years of high school.

He received honors in his history major at Morehouse College. The university designated him an Oprah Winfrey Scholar after he returned from medical leave midway through his college career. As part of the community service requirements required to keep his scholarship, he began teaching at Franklin Lebby Stanton Elementary School.

His first job after graduating from Morehouse was working as a research assistant for a history professor.

Professional Life

He became a pastor for Total Grace Christian Center in Georgia after quitting the teaching profession. The Courageous Church in Atlanta was founded by him in 2008. A Facebook Pastor was his method of attracting new members at the time. After four years as a pastor for the Courageous Church, he resigned, citing personal difficulties and disillusionment.

King rose to prominence after penning an article about the crime scene following the shooting of Michael Brown. During his investigation, he revealed that Wilson, the officer, was not in any danger at the time of the incident.

He began blogging for the politically liberal website Daily Kos in September 2014. He has primarily focused his website on civil rights and violence in Missouri, Ferguson, and South Carolina.
